I feared that the Omicron variant will spoil my good spirit towards 2022. Well, it was not Omicron but another variant of an another malady: the duplicity and cynical political exploitation made in perfect media timing. Turning a nationalist issue into a religious one. It is false, it is dangerous, and it is disheartening to those of us who believe that "our" religious leaders are sincerely above political gains.

As a front line advocate for Christians (and I am not alone in that, as attested by dozens and hundreds who devote countless hours and inexhaustible efforts, both with and without me), I am infuriated by the duplicity and cynical political exploitation made every year in perfect media timing. Christians’ lives are certainly not made easy by our own extremists, yet describing a sort of prolong ethnic cleansing, “one of the worst in the Christian history of the Holy Land”, without mentioning any of the countless examples of support offered to Christian by both civil society and the state, is a deliberate choice, reeking of politics and incompatible with the claim of pursuit of truth and justice. Although they will not publish the following post, I suggest that you share the numerous activities carried out to aid and support Christians in Jerusalem and throughout Israel, with every Christian you know. I’ll start, and you are cordially invited to add your contributions: write here, send photos, and by the New Year we’ll present the heads of the church who endorsed the document with a handsome album. What will the album contain? The initiatives and activities undertaken by Israeli Jews in support and aid of the local Christian sphere. Here are a few examples that immediately come to mind: - The translation and filling out of forms,
- organization and provision of financial donations,
- voluntary, unpaid work (legal services, medical aid, electricity work, professional consulting in various fields, the initiation of agricultural projects such as apiaries, gardening, clean-ups, petitioning various institutions),
- church products’ sale events,
- purchase of self protection cameras,
- delegations of olive-pickers to help harvest monastery-owned olive groves,
- cleaning Christian cemeteries and cleaning the courtyards of Christian holy sites,
- mediation in government offices (obtaining licenses, gathering information, facilitating),
- joint activities with Christian schools (the 200 Hanukah doughnuts sent to an Arab Christian school also count…),
- courses on Christianity in Israel, offered free of charge to Arab and Jewish tour guides,
- Hebrew lessons to Christians
and this is only a partial list.
All is given freely, willingly and without charge. No count is kept of the hours, days and weeks spent, the costs of items given, the gas purchased for driving and making deliveries throughout the country. No count is kept of headaches and heartache.
What I do keep count of are the disgraceful lists of offences against Christians (and all other minorities and underprivileged sectors in Israeli society, of any religious affiliation and ethnicity!) great and small. But when truth and justice are invoked – I am also committed to recording the deeds of the good.
The Gospel says:
10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. And also: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Cleaning and documenting Christian cemeteries 2013- 2019
continuing the clean-up of Anglican cemetery thanks to Lutheran -Jewish cooperation. (the Anglicans never ever wrote a single word about this - neither to the volunteers nor mention in their newsletters.)
most recent, actually this week: the periodical package of medication, donated by kibbutzim in the north, to a certain Christian community that asked for this specific help.
A certain monastery in Jerusalem, is asking yearly to have a massive cleaning of the street before it's feast day. This year, the mother superior was bed-ridden and to her request the municipality cleaning staff entered in, swept and brushed the entirety of the monastery. Thank God one of them took this video (so the nun can see the results without getting up from her bed!)!
So, the truth is, actually, that there is light as well as darkness. And when you chose to emphasize darkness – I choose to show that there is light, too. The truth sets us free. Send me photos and anecdotes and I will craft them into a magnificent, light-filled album. And hopefully, this small act will encourage thousands of good, kind Israelis to maintain their support and backup of Christians and the various branches of the church (as well as other faiths). It will help shed light on those who are still in darkness, in every sense of the term.
I am not in the habit of recording and documenting the thousands of light-bringing events and activities. I have always believed that philanthropy should never be flaunted, and that charitable activities should not include “photo-opportunities” promoting the doers.
This, apparently, has been to our detriment, and therefore, for once I chose a different path.

I received responses from several Christians, with different sentiments. I will be deeply thankful to local Arab Christians if they share their sincere thoughts about this specific statement with me. Even when you beg do differ.
Here is one response which I received from a local Christian:
Dear Yisca, as a Christian religious I agree with your words and understand your sadness.
Yet your sadness is not the saddest thing. The saddest thing is that in these statements from our leaders there is no "Good News". And with each of these announcements the church is increasingly perceived as more of a political than a spiritual organization.
With this approach we Christians only lose credibility and gain nothing. There are also many Christians, not only Jews, who are embarrassed by the sometimes overly political and unbalanced statements of church leaders.
But perhaps our mistake is to naively expect too much from these people, a more spiritual and truthful vision of reality, when Jesus clearly warned us: "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

הכל חינם. לא סופרים שעות, ימים, שבועות, לא סופרים הוצאות על קניות, על מוצרים, גם לא על הדלק לנסיעות ולמשלוחים בכל קצווי הארץ. לא סופרים כאבי ראש וכאבי לב. אני בהחלט כן סופרת את הרשימות השחורות של הפגיעות בנוצרים (ובכל המיעוטים והמקופחים בחברה הישראלית, מכל דת ועדה!) מקטן ועד גדול. אבל כשאני נדרשת לאמת וצדק - אני מחויבת לדווח גם על עשייתם של הטובים. כתוב בברית החדשה: 10 הָאוֹהֵב אֶת אָחִיו עוֹמֵד בָּאוֹר וּמִכְשׁוֹל אֵין בּוֹ. 11 אֲבָל הַשֹוֹנֵא אֶת אָחִיו בַּחֹשֶׁךְ הוּא; בַּחֹשֶׁךְ הוּא מִתְהַלֵּךְ וְאֵינוֹ יוֹדֵעַ לְאָן הוּא הוֹלֵךְ, כִּי הַחֹשֶׁךְ עִוֵּר אֶת עֵינָיו. וכן כתוב: תֵדְעוּ אֶת הָאֱמֶת וְהָאֱמֶת תְּשַׁחְרֵר אֶתְכֶם.
